The Heavy Lifting

My gardening philosophy has always been to 'do less.' I do not always practice what I preach but, in general, I would suggest that 'doing less' is a good life skill for most aspects of adulting. There are always exceptions for this garden philosophy of course. Creating new raised beds is usually one of those. There is no way to get around the hard work of hauling soil and compost. These new raised, corrugated steel beds are really great for my space. I added a couple two years ago and three more last fall. I plan to add at least two more this summer/fall once I finish the fence. The old, cedar beds were a great option for the first five years I was gardening here but they are not very pretty and a little larger than is convenient.

I am taking the soil from the old beds and transferring it to the new beds one at a time. I am also adding all of my available compost, decomposed straw, and basic organic elements like urea and worm castings, based on last summer's soil tests.

This time-lapse video is just a few minutes of me doing the hauling. Its not fun work but I got to skip the gym that day! If you watch to the end you will see my very clingy dog, Cheppu, come into the shot. She was beside herself because her tie-out was stuck on a plant. She is a special garden flower that helps me take lots of breaks!
